Boston Scientific has restored its operations weeks after being hit by a cyberattack.
The medical device maker has fully restored manufacturing, order fulfillment and shipping operations, the company said in a Wednesday statement posted to its website. Boston Scientific said that its distribution network is working at or above normal levels as the company fills customer orders and reduces backlogs that have built up over the past few weeks.
“As order processing continues, we are working to fulfill customer orders as quickly as possible, including those pending prior to the August 25 cybersecurity incident and those received during the disruption,” Boston Scientific said in the statement. “While some customers may continue to experience temporary delays, we are prioritizing manufacturing and distribution efforts to support ongoing customer demand and minimize the impact on patients and healthcare providers.”
Boston Scientific, working with CrowdStrike and other third-party cybersecurity experts, has not identified evidence of ongoing threat activity or evidence of compromise to the company’s systems or products since implementing containment procedures on Aug. 25.
Late last month, Boston Scientific disclosed a cyberattack that significantly disrupted its business, taking down manufacturing, order processing and shipping. The company was the latest medical device firm to be hit by a cyberattack this year.
CEO offers more insight
CEO Mike Mahoney said at the Wells Fargo Healthcare Conference on Thursday that “all of our plants were shut down and distribution centers were shut down globally.” The CEO added that during the shutdown some procedures were lost due to hospital supply.
“Some areas or some regions or some businesses would have adequate supply, many didn’t,” Mahoney said. “Hospitals were unsure — as we were at the time — how long it would be, and so some hospitals likely ordered from others during that time, which would be understandable.”
Due to the disruptions to its business, the company said earlier this week that it will likely miss third-quarter and full-year sales and earnings guidance. The full impact is still unclear. Mahoney said at the Wells Fargo event that “it’s hard to pinpoint that exact dollar amount at this point.”
An essential part of understanding the financial impact is figuring out what the recapture rate will be for the business, Mahoney said. Boston Scientific plans to give more specific information on its next earnings call, scheduled for Oct. 28.
Even before the attack, Boston Scientific was having a challenging year. The company has slashed its guidance twice this year due to ongoing struggles for key businesses.
Stifel analysts, in a note to investors earlier this week, wrote that “we suspect that both investors and the stock ‘view’ 2026 as being something of a lost year for Boston Scientific.”
