Science fiction is rapidly becoming our daily reality. Today, scientists can rewrite DNA and grow human organs in labs. These “Engineering Life” tools are already here. However, as we gain the power to “fix” the human body, a deeper question emerges: Who are we, really?

Quid est homo? Quis est homo?

This March, you have a unique opportunity to join some of the world’s most brilliant minds to explore these questions. The 3rd International Conference on the Ethics of Engineering Life (ICEEL 2026) is happening online on March 23rd and 24th, and it is completely free for everyone to attend.

Beyond the lab: where science meets the soul

ICEEL stands out because it focuses on the human heart. It is far more than a technical seminar for doctors. Instead, it creates a multidisciplinary space where science meets the soul. The speakers do not just discuss technical capabilities. Rather, they ask whether we should use these tools and how our choices define our future.

Furthermore, the 2026 program offers a journey through the human experience. For instance, Telmo Pievani critiques “de-extinction,” while legendary director David Cronenberg shares his cinematic vision of the body. Consequently, attendees will explore the very boundaries of existence. This is a rare chance to see a Stanford scientist, a Vatican bioethicist, and a Hollywood visionary on one virtual stage. [Full list of speakers here]

    Why you should tune in

The organizers prioritize open dialogue over dry, one-way lectures. Specifically, you can expect these key highlights:

    • The Promise of Healing: Experts explore how gene therapies might cure permanent diseases.
    • The Ethical Threshold: Maria Chiara Carrozza discusses the “Triple R” approach: Responsibility, Ethics, and Security.
    • The Human Touch: Musicians Alexey Botvinov and Burhan Öçal show how art helps us understand our vulnerability in a high-tech world.

    How to join (It’s free!)

The NCCR Molecular Systems Engineering of the University of Basel and ETH Zurich, the Pontifical Academy for Life, and Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital jointly organize this event. They believe these topics are too important to stay behind closed doors. Therefore, they have made the entire conference accessible online.

Whether you are a student, a professional, or simply curious, your perspective matters.
