FDA Clears Kneu Health Apple Watch Tool for 24/7 Parkinson’s Tremor and Dyskinesia Monitoring

    What You Should Know

    • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared a new Apple Watch-based monitoring tool developed by Kneu Health for clinical tracking of Parkinson’s disease symptoms.
    • Provides 24/7 continuous passive measurement of tremor alongside the platform’s first-time capability to track dyskinesia—the involuntary movements often triggered as a side effect of long-term dopaminergic medications.
    • Pairs continuous, passive smartwatch data with active, smartphone-based motor and cognitive assessments that are already FDA-cleared in Kneu’s mobile app.
    • Replaces subjective patient memory and isolated clinic snapshot evaluations with continuous, longitudinal real-world telemetry, helping neurologists detect disease progression earlier and fine-tune medication regimens.

Pairing Passive Biometrics with Active Cognitive and Motor Tests

Evaluating Parkinson’s disease in a standard 20-minute clinic visit has long posed a diagnostic dilemma for neurologists: motor symptoms fluctuate significantly hour by hour as dopaminergic medication levels peak and trough. Brief in-office physical exams capture only an isolated snapshot, while paper symptom logs rely heavily on subjective patient recall, leaving medication-induced dyskinesias and wearing-off periods largely unquantified.

Spun out of a decade of longitudinal neurology research at the University of Oxford, Kneu Health previously earned FDA clearance for smartphone-based active assessments of rest and postural tremors. The new clearance expands the platform into continuous multimodal surveillance, linking passive background sensing with structured patient tests.

The synchronized monitoring model provides several key clinical capabilities:

    • 24/7 Passive Tremor and Dyskinesia Tracking: Uses Apple Watch accelerometers and gyroscopes to distinguish between Parkinsonian tremor and medication-induced dyskinesia—the involuntary writhing movements that signal levodopa overmedication.
    • Multimodal Active Correlation: Pairs continuous sensor telemetry with active smartphone-based motor dexterity drills and cognitive evaluations completed periodically by the patient.
    • Actionable Longitudinal Profiles: Aggregates real-world motor fluctuations into structured trend reports, allowing movement disorder specialists to adjust dosing intervals, reduce “off” time, and identify early disease progression without waiting for acute decompensation.

    Clinical Footprint and NHS Adoption

The platform is backed by Oxford Science Enterprises and Cedars-Sinai, operating across major U.S. health systems and ten National Health Service (NHS) organizations in the United Kingdom, where the tool is registered with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). During its initial rollout across UK pilot sites, 79% of eligible patients adopted the watch-based tracking within two weeks of introduction.
