H1 Acquires Healthcare Data Company Defacto Health to Bolster Provider Network Intelligence

    What You Should Know

    • Healthcare professional intelligence leader H1 has acquired Defacto Health, a specialized healthcare data company focused on payer-provider networks, accepted insurance plans, and directory accuracy.
    • The transaction formalizes a long-term data partnership, absorbing Defacto’s proprietary directory auditing, error-cluster isolation, and network benchmarking engines directly into H1’s global platform.
    • Defacto will operate directly within H1; co-founders Ron Urwongse and Tarun J. Theogaraj—both former leaders of provider data and interoperability platforms at CAQH—join H1 to lead network intelligence initiatives.

Ingesting Granular Payer Network & Plan Acceptance Intelligence

Defacto Health was founded by former CAQH provider-data veterans Ron Urwongse (former head of provider-data and interoperability solutions) and Tarun J. Theogaraj (former product lead for CAQH’s flagship provider data platform).

Defacto aggregates, cleans, and analyzes payer networks, published machine-readable files, provider directories, and practice demographics. Both co-founders will join H1 to lead its network intelligence division, embedding Defacto’s specialized capabilities into H1’s enterprise ecosystem:

    • Directory Accuracy & Error Clustering: Identifies systemic inaccuracies in payer directories by pinpointing error clusters across specific medical specialties, geographic regions, and facility groups before they trigger regulatory audit penalties.
    • Real-Time Plan Acceptance Verification: Tracks which commercial, Medicare Advantage, and Medicaid plans providers actively accept in practice, closing the disconnect between contracted rosters and real-world billing patterns.
    • Network Adequacy Benchmarking: Evaluates network breadth and specialist access against competing regional health plans to support regulatory filings and commercial network design.

Reinforcing H1’s Doctor Graph and Payer Penetration

The acquisition vertically integrates a data layer that H1 had previously licensed. According to H1 leadership, directory and network errors have historically generated roughly half of the company’s customer support tickets, making native ownership of network intelligence critical to core operations.

Defacto’s datasets will be integrated directly into H1’s Doctor Graph—its core AI foundation mapping physician clinical expertise, academic publications, referral flows, and institutional relationships. While H1’s commercial presence originally centered on life sciences and pharmaceutical clinical trial site selection, the successive additions of Ribbon, Veda, and Defacto cement its position as enterprise infrastructure for health plans. Today, H1’s provider intelligence powers 9 of the 10 largest U.S. health plans and reaches 85% of top-20 pharmaceutical manufacturers.

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
