How eClinicalWorks is Harnessing AI and Telehealth to Support Rural Healthcare Organizations

Rural communities face a complex web of barriers that hinder access to quality healthcare, including long travel distances, workforce shortages, limited broadband for telehealth, underinsurance, low health literacy, and social stigmas. These obstacles often discourage individuals from seeking timely medical care and contribute to disproportionate health burdens such as shorter life expectancy, higher rates of chronic disease, and fewer preventive care options compared to urban areas. Despite ongoing discussions about access to care, many rural populations continue to struggle to obtain the healthcare they need.

Rural Health Initiative: CMS’s $50 Billion Commitment

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recognized the challenges faced by more than 61 million Americans who live in rural areas and launched a $50 billion Rural Health Transformation Program. The initiative aims to strengthen rural healthcare and empower states to transform existing infrastructure and build new systems that expand healthcare access, address sustainable access, attract and retain high-skilled workers, integrate technological and AI advancements, and enhance patient outcomes in rural areas.

24% of the rural population reported no past-year use of preventive care compared to just under 19% of the urban population. Economic barriers are a significant factor, with higher out-of-pocket costs and limited insurance options discouraging prompt medical care. Additionally, workforce shortages strain rural healthcare systems, leading to provider burnout. These barriers underscore the pressing need for innovative solutions and targeted approaches to address rural health disparities.

To help address these challenges, eClinicalWorks offers comprehensive solutions designed to enhance access, elevate quality, and alleviate burdens across rural practices and communities. By providing essential tools and support, eClinicalWorks assists states and organizations participating in the AI-Powered Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP) initiated by CMS/U.S. government.

    Transforming Rural Healthcare: Innovative Solutions

    1. AI drives Rural Healthcare Transformation: With cutting-edge technology and a focus on streamlining operations, enhancing patient engagement, and improving outcomes, many AI-powered technologies can help meet the needs of rural communities and rural hospitals nationwide.
    • The eClinicalWorks AI bundle is a game-changer for rural healthcare organizations, addressing administrative burdens and enhancing operational efficiency.
    • AI-powered solutions, such as Sunoh.ai, the AI scribe, are designed to simplify clinical documentation, support multilingual populations, and reduce provider burnout by cutting documentation time.
    • healow Genie, the AI-powered contact center, automates handling of patient queries, reduces administrative burdens, and ensures timely access to vital health information.
    • The healow AI-powered no-show prediction model helps practices manage no-shows, cancellations, and reschedule appointments in a timely manner, allowing them to serve the community efficiently.
    1. Telehealth Bridges Healthcare Gaps: Telehealth solutions have the potential to address geographic and staff shortage issues faced by practices. Solutions like healow TeleVisits empower providers to reach out to their patients anytime and anywhere, offering remote office visits for minor concerns or routine follow-ups, reducing the need for in-person visits. healow CHECK-IN and patient portal strengthen patient engagement by allowing easy, secure appointment check-ins and providing 24/7 access to health records, enhancing adherence to treatment plans.
    2. Value-Based Care: Solutions must be tailored to the unique needs of rural communities to enable proactive and coordinated care. For instance, the eClinicalWorks Value-Based Care bundle helps enhance healthcare delivery in rural communities, including essential tools such as care planning, Chronic Care Management (CCM), Transition Care Management (TCM), a care plan oversight module, and Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM), all of which contribute to improved quality of care tailored to these areas’ unique needs.
    3. Comprehensive Solutions for Rural Communities: eClinicalWorks delivers tailored behavioral health solutions for rural communities, integrating inpatient and outpatient EHR systems with medical, dental, vision, and pharmacy services. The 24/7 behavioral health component supports intensive outpatient services, while cloud-based EHR software enhances practice management and patient engagement, aiding in patient retention and service expansion.

Addressing these rural health inequities requires sustained investment in community partnerships, infrastructure development, and innovative research. For providers, health systems, and vendor partners like eClinicalWorks, the opportunity is clear: combine digital health tools with community-driven strategies to close the access gap in rural America. Empowering rural healthcare providers and practices ensures that solutions are both effective and sustainable, paving the way for a more equitable healthcare system across all communities.
