    What You Should Know

    • New York Cancer & Blood Specialists (NYCBS) has partnered with Talkiatry to provide integrated, high-quality psychiatric care to oncology and hematology patients.
    • The collaboration will roll out across more than 30 NYCBS locations throughout New York, ensuring patients can access mental health support as a core part of their treatment.
    • Talkiatry’s network of over 300 board-certified psychiatrists will provide both in-person and virtual consultations, accepting most major insurance plans to ensure affordability.
    • The partnership aims to address the significant mental health burden on cancer patients, where up to 25% of individuals experience clinical depression during their journey.
    • Referrals will be handled through a seamless, integrated workflow, allowing oncologists to connect patients with specialized psychiatrists who understand the unique needs of cancer survivors.

The clinical intersection of oncology and mental health is often where the most significant gaps in patient care occur. For a patient navigating a cancer diagnosis, the psychological toll—ranging from acute anxiety to deep clinical depression—can be as debilitating as the physical symptoms of the disease. Recognizing this “unseen” burden, New York Cancer & Blood Specialists (NYCBS)  has entered into a strategic partnership with Talkiatry, a leading provider of high-quality psychiatric care, to bring mental health services directly into the oncology workflow.

This collaboration is designed to move beyond the traditional “referral and wait” model. By integrating Talkiatry’s psychiatric expertise into NYCBS’s vast network of more than 30 locations, the two organizations are building a “whole-person” care infrastructure. This ensures that as a patient undergoes chemotherapy or radiation, they also have immediate, coordinated access to a psychiatrist who specializes in the unique emotional complexities of chronic and terminal illness.

Scaling Specialized Behavioral Health in Specialty Medicine

A primary challenge in oncology-specific mental health is the scarcity of psychiatrists who understand the interplay between psychiatric medications and complex cancer treatments. Talkiatry addresses this through its extensive network of more than 300 board-certified psychiatrists, many of whom have deep experience in psycho-oncology. This specialized knowledge is critical for managing the mood disorders, sleep disturbances, and cognitive changes that frequently accompany intensive cancer therapies.

Jeff Vacirca, MD, CEO of NYCBS, noted that this partnership reflects the system’s commitment to treating the “entire patient,” not just the malignancy. By leveraging Talkiatry’s hybrid model—which offers both in-office visits and telehealth options—NYCBS can provide consistent support to patients regardless of their location or mobility status. This flexibility is particularly vital for patients whose treatment schedules or physical health make traveling to separate appointments difficult.

    Seamless Integration and Insurance Accessibility

From an operational standpoint, the partnership is built on a “seamless referral” engine. Talkiatry’s proprietary technology allows NYCBS oncologists to initiate psychiatric consults within their existing clinical workflows, ensuring that mental health support is a proactive rather than a reactive measure. Furthermore, because Talkiatry accepts most major insurance plans, the service remains accessible to a broad demographic of New Yorkers, removing the financial barriers that often prevent patients from seeking behavioral health support.

The impact of this integration is expected to be measurable in both patient satisfaction and clinical outcomes. Aman Magoon, CEO and co-founder of Talkiatry, emphasized that the goal is to provide “high-fidelity” psychiatry that is deeply rooted in the clinical reality of the oncology clinic. By making mental health a standard utility of cancer care, the partnership aims to reduce the long-term trauma of the cancer journey and ensure that survivors have the tools they need for a comprehensive recovery.
