Virtual Incision said Wednesday it named Jim Alecxih as CEO, as the surgical robot company prepares to accelerate development and commercialization of its next robotic system.
Longtime CEO John Murphy will remain part of the company in the role of senior adviser to the board.
“John served as CEO of Virtual Incision during a pivotal time, leading the company from its early startup stage through De Novo authorization and clinical clearance,” a company spokesperson said in an email. “As the company moves toward FDA submission for its M2 platform and prepares for commercialization, John and the board agreed that it was the right time to bring in new leadership with deep experience in robotic commercialization.”
Alecxih previously was CEO of artificial intelligence software company DH Medical and has more than 30 years’ experience in surgical technologies, including a role at Intuitive Surgical supporting the adoption and growth of the da Vinci robotic system.
Virtual Incision said that Alecxih, during his time at Intuitive, was head of U.S. sales and “instrumental in driving adoption of robotic-assisted surgery among hospitals and health systems nationwide.”
Lincoln, Nebraska-based Virtual Incision is one of several robot developers emerging to challenge Intuitive’s lead in soft-tissue robotic surgery. Its miniaturized Mira robot received de novo authorization from the Food and Drug Administration in 2024 for use in colectomy procedures.
Alecxih’s appointment coincides with a planned series of FDA submissions in various specialties for its next system, M2, the company said. The single-port M2 system is intended as a smaller, simpler alternative to cart-based robots, according to Virtual Incision.
The Mira robot traveled to the International Space Station last year as part of NASA experiments testing whether astronauts could someday receive surgical care in space from surgeons on Earth.
