Wandercraft Acquires Ekso Bionics from ChronoScale to Form World’s Largest Medical Exoskeleton Powerhouse

    What You Should Know

    • Dynamic physical AI and robotic mobility pioneer Wandercraft announced the acquisition of Ekso Bionics, Inc. from a subsidiary of ChronoScale Holdings Corporation, the transaction was unanimously approved by both boards of directors and signed and closed simultaneously (financial terms undisclosed).
    • The business combination merges Wandercraft’s proprietary physical AI, dynamic balance robotics, and European/EMEA market leadership with Ekso Bionics’ two decades of pioneering engineering, extensive U.S. clinical footprint, and commercial infrastructure, establishing the world’s largest medical exoskeleton manufacturer.
    • Creates a unified global clinical footprint supporting upright gait and mobility training across more than 700 rehabilitation and research centers worldwide, providing combined institutional coverage across the United States, Europe, and international markets.

Uniting Two Fleets Across Clinical Rehabilitation and Everyday Mobility

The combined platform will continue supporting all four flagship clinical and personal devices, establishing an end-to-end continuum of care from acute inpatient neurorehabilitation to independent daily living:

    • Institutional Clinical Rehabilitation (Atalante X & EksoNR): The combined hardware fleet currently supports upright standing and gait therapy across more than 700 rehabilitation centers worldwide. Together, the two systems hold FDA clearances and CE markings spanning stroke, spinal cord injury (SCI), multiple sclerosis (MS), and acquired brain injury (ABI).
    • Personal In-Home Upright Mobility (Eve & Indego Personal): For eligible individuals with spinal cord injuries, the portfolio now pairs Eve™ (Wandercraft’s FDA-cleared hands-free, self-balancing robotic exoskeleton for personal home use) with Indego Personal (Ekso’s modular, lightweight wearable exoskeleton), providing adaptable approaches to daily upright mobility.
    • Unified Clinical Support Network: Rehabilitation hospitals and physical therapy networks gain single-source access to technical specialists and clinical educators trained across both Atalante X and EksoNR, allowing centers to tailor therapy protocols while preserving dedicated support.

Overcoming the Commercial Reimbursement Hurdle: HCPCS K1007

Historically, personal exoskeleton adoption in the United States was suppressed by out-of-pocket costs exceeding $75,000 to $100,000 per unit. Wandercraft has structured dedicated market access infrastructure to scale personal adoption under Medicare:

In the United States, eligible individuals who meet clinical necessity criteria can access qualified personal robotic exoskeletons covered under Medicare’s brace benefit category, billed under HCPCS code K1007. Through Wandercraft’s dedicated patient access team and training facilities (such as the Walk in New York by Wandercraft rehabilitation center), the company assists clinicians, patients, and caregivers with clinical charting, prior authorization documentation, payer appeals, and financial coordination.

By uniting Wandercraft’s leadership across Europe (EMEA) with Ekso’s established footprint across North America, the combined entity possesses the clinical trial scale and registry data required to lobby for standardized reimbursement across European national health systems and commercial U.S. payers.

Physical AI Meets Enterprise Robotic Scale

Wandercraft originated out of advanced French mathematical dynamic-balance research, establishing technical leadership in self-balancing “physical AI” and commercial strength in Europe. Ekso Bionics brings two decades of clinical trial evidence, deep U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and academic hospital relationships, and broad North American commercial infrastructure.

Wandercraft’s self-balancing software and gait trajectory models improve as real-world sensor steps accumulate. Absorbing Ekso’s clinical footprint expands the aggregate volume of patient steps, joint kinematic data, and assistive torque profiles feeding Wandercraft’s proprietary physical AI models.

Beyond medical devices, Wandercraft continues to apply its physical balance and locomotion algorithms to industrial robotics—including Calvin-40™, its autonomous humanoid robot designed for heavy lifting and industrial labor. The mechanical engineering and actuator expertise gained from Ekso Bionics’ medical and industrial portfolio accelerates Wandercraft’s broader robotics manufacturing and supply chain efficiencies.

“We share a vision for how robotics can empower people whose mobility has been unfairly limited by injury or disease,” said Matthieu Masselin, CEO and Co-founder of Wandercraft. “Both companies have pioneered advanced technologies to help people stand, walk, and participate more fully in everyday life. By bringing together our products, teams, and clinical relationships on both sides of the Atlantic, we have an exceptional opportunity to expand access to robotic mobility worldwide, reach more patients and rehabilitation professionals, and help more people experience the independence and connection that upright mobility can offer.”
