What You Should Know
- The Acquisition: Specialty-specific EHR and software provider ModMed (backed by Clearlake Capital) has acquired Bonsai Health, a high-growth “agentic AI” patient engagement platform. Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed.
- The Core Technology: Unlike passive chatbots, Bonsai utilizes an “agentic AI” engine. It actively works behind the scenes to identify clinical care gaps in a patient’s history, matches them with open slots in a provider’s schedule, and proactively reaches out via SMS and email to secure the booking—all without human intervention.
- The Strategic Integration: Bonsai’s capabilities will complement ModMed’s existing patient engagement suite, Klara. While Klara serves as the centralized hub for staff-driven conversational workflows, Bonsai will act as the proactive, automated AI layer.
- The Market Scale: ModMed plans to aggressively roll out Bonsai’s technology across its existing footprint of nearly 50,000 specialty providers, including dermatology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, and gastroenterology practices.
An Engine for Practice Growth and Patient Reactivation
Bonsai Health operates as an advanced “agentic AI” engine that identifies operational and clinical gaps without manual intervention. Key capabilities integrated into the ModMed ecosystem include:
- Automated Patient Reactivation: The AI automatically scans patient histories to identify care gaps and reaches out via multi-channel SMS and email to bring patients back into the office.
- AI-Driven Self-Scheduling: The platform identifies openings in a provider’s schedule and coordinates appointments directly with patients, filling the calendar automatically.
- Workflow Integration: Bonsai complements ModMed’s existing Klara suite. While Klara manages conversational communication, Bonsai adds a layer of specialized, proactive intelligence focused on practice growth and staff relief.
Scaling Innovation for 50,000 Providers
The acquisition brings significant domain expertise to ModMed. Bonsai Health was founded by Travis Schneider and Luke Kervin, the entrepreneurs behind PatientPop.
By joining ModMed, Bonsai’s technology will scale across a network of nearly 50,000 providers in specialties including:
- Dermatology and Ophthalmology
- Orthopedics and Gastroenterology
- ENT and other surgical specialties
“ModMed’s deep clinical datasets and industry-leading infrastructure provide the perfect environment to advance our agentic AI innovation faster than ever before,” said Luke Kervin, co-Founder and co-CEO of Bonsai Health.
