- Pebble has teased a new smartwatch on its website and social media
- The new device looks like it could be an updated Pebble Time Round
- That could come almost a decade after the original was discontinued
The Pebble Time Round was a bit of a mixed bag when it launched almost a decade ago. While we loved its slimline design and ease of use when we reviewed it, it had too many issues – including subpar battery life and an expensive price tag – for us to wholeheartedly recommend it.
The Time Round went the same way as Pebble when the company folded, but now that Pebble has started releasing watches again, people have been wondering if the Round might get another, err, round. And that idea just received a massive boost from Pebble itself with a new post on social media.
An animated image uploaded to X by the official Pebble account shows a circular watch face with a ticking second hand. Underneath is the headline “Something’s coming…” followed by the date of December 9 at 7AM PST. Presumably, this is the release time and date for whatever it is that Pebble has planned next.
The circular design appears to be a huge clue that the device is a new version of the Time Round smartwatch. Pebble currently sells two watches – the Pebble Time 2 and the Pebble 2 Duo – and both of them use rectangular faces. The Pebble Time Round was the company’s only past device to come with a circular watch face, making a refreshed version the number one candidate for the mysterious new product.
Intriguing possibilities
Pebble watches were always known for their lengthy battery life, a trend that the original Pebble Time Round broke with when it slashed the longevity from a typical seven-day lifespan to just two days. That was due to the brighter, more detailed display compared to Pebble’s other offerings, and we’re hoping that in the decade since it launched, Pebble has been able to combine that bright, beautiful screen with more impressive battery life.
We’d also like to see a more modern take on the design of the new version. One drawback of the original was the incredibly chunky bezel that surrounded the entire screen. With advances in display technology, that should become a thing of the past.
Pebble’s website hints that more new updates may be coming beyond the rumored new Pebble Time Round. On Pebble’s home page, you’ll find the same ticking “Something’s coming” image, plus a question mark above the text “Coming soon: More cool stuff??” We’ve not seen any indication of what this could be, whether that’s a new product, an update to a past device, or something else entirely.
