Medtronic will establish a European software hub in Galway, Ireland, focused on care systems for cardiac patients.
The Patient Care Systems hub will develop cloud-based platforms and clinical software to support connected care for patients with implanted cardiac devices, according to a Thursday statement from economic development agency IDA Ireland. The investment will add 85 jobs initially. New roles at the site will include leadership, software engineering and systems reliability positions.
The company anticipates more growth over the next three years as it invests in digital health innovation.
“PCS in Galway represents far more than an expansion of our footprint,” Alex Mann, vice president of Patient Care Systems for Medtronic, said in the statement. “Our vision is to build an enduring software capability that advances cardiac care, accelerates innovation and delivers solutions that empower clinicians and improves patient outcomes worldwide.”
Medtronic moved its corporate headquarters to Ireland in 2015 when it acquired Irish medical device manufacturer Covidien. Over the past 40 years, Medtronic has invested about 11 billion euros in the country, including 1.2 billion euros in research and development, said Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin.
The new Galway initiative follows the expansion of Medtronic’s London office to create a global hub for artificial intelligence and robotics in surgery. Medtronic is also consolidating cardiology businesses and plans to close a site in Santa Rosa, California, following a review of global operations.
Medtronic is not the only medtech company to recently expand in Ireland. Boston Scientific plans to invest $88.5 million to expand R&D capabilities in Galway.
