The OpenAI Foundation hepatitis C initiative has officially launched with a $100 million commitment to a nationwide public health effort. Titled Breakthroughs to Follow-Through (B2F), the program aims to bridge the persistent gap between medical innovation and patient care by leveraging advanced AI tools.

Furthermore, the initiative is managed by the Common Health Coalition, a multi-sector collaborative established in 2023. The program’s primary target is hepatitis C. Although highly effective, short-term curative treatments exist for this viral infection, it remains a significant public health challenge in the United States.

    Bridging the “Discovery-to-Delivery” Gap

While direct-acting antiviral medications can cure more than 95% of hepatitis C cases within eight to 12 weeks, public health data suggests that approximately two-thirds of Americans living with the virus remain untreated.

“Our $100 million investment is a commitment to scaling that impact by pairing frontier AI capabilities with the expertise of trusted local partners,” said Anna Makanju, head of civil society and philanthropy at the OpenAI Foundation, in a statement released August 13, 2026.

Consequently, the project will deploy AI-enabled infrastructure designed to assist healthcare teams in:

    • Patient Identification: Locating patients who have fallen out of the care continuum.
    • Workflow Efficiency: Synthesizing complex patient records and automating administrative burdens.
    • Resource Allocation: Prioritizing outreach efforts for those most likely to benefit from immediate intervention.

    Scalability and Future Scope

The B2F initiative will initially launch in four states: Alabama, Illinois, Louisiana, and Massachusetts. In addition, the coalition plans to expand to four more jurisdictions within the next six months. Dr. Dave A. Chokshi, chair of the Common Health Coalition, emphasized that hepatitis C is merely the first milestone.

“Hepatitis C is our first target, but we also have a broader goal with this initiative,” said Dr. Chokshi. Ultimately, the coalition intends to adapt the underlying AI infrastructure to address other critical health areas, including HIV prevention and specific curable cancers, thereby creating a more responsive and modern health infrastructure.
